Resumes
Writing a Resume:
- Keep content easy to read yet effective and to the point.
- Experience and qualifications need to be related to position. View Job Posting Analysis.
- Be specific and give examples that demonstrate skills and value to the employer. View Resume Tips.
- If necessary, have more than one resume; short resume (pdf) and long resume (pdf)
- Keep layout simple.
What To Include:
The underlines indicate the information areas needed for a good resume:
- Contact information; name (name known by (i.e.:William "Will"Jones); address (city and state are all that is necessary. Due to identity issue, exact number and street are not given here); phone number includes message phones and cell phones.
- Objective: a statement of the exact job wanted. (Seeking a position as the Administrative Assistant for the Adjunct Services Office at Gateway Community College.)
- Summary of Skills or Qualifications that relate to the job posting. Highlight the specific skills possessed that relate to the position applied for.The Minimum Qualifications in the job posting should be addressed here.
- Education: institutions and degrees most recent date first.Once a person has taken college courses, high school is no longer needed on the resume.
- Work Experience or Professional Experience; this can be jobs in different fields that use skills relevant to the job focus
- Related skills listed with a specific employer using action words View Action Verbs (pdf).
- Skills that match the job description. View Job Posting Analysis.
- Identify each skill requested within the job description and specify how the skill was used
What Not To Include:
- Personal information: religion, family, picture, age, nationality, etc.
- Too many skills and experience that detract from the focus of the job choice; the resume should give a clear indication of the type of job want.(i.e.: Listing the job of "Bartender" when a faculty position is being applied for)
- Long, wordy work history. -Most resumes only go back five to ten years. Some job fields, such as education or medicine, do expect longer job histories. When applying in the MCCCD system, resumes can be of any length with relevant experience listed.Resumes not in the academic work environment should be no longer than 2 pages.
Resumes On-line:
- Most employers want resumes posted on-line and MCCC District is no exception. For help developing a resume and/or cover letter visit a MCCCD College Career Centers either in person or online.Check for colleges at www.maricopa.edu
