Hiring Process
For faculty positions the application process is listed in the general human resources web site. The processes for MAT and PSA positions are similar and can take up to 8weeks to get through. If there are not enough eligible candidates the process would be re-opened and the time from start to finish will increase. The process increments follow. These are very general since each individual college has the autonomy to conduct their process slightly different.
- A need is identified for a specific job.
- The manager who identified the need usually will be the committee chair.
- Position request is put before the Campus Budget Committee.
- The hiring chair will select the hiring committee.
- The hiring/search committee is assembled including representatives from diverse departments which may including MAT, PSA, Faculty, both men and women, and minority representation.
- A job posting is developed. It can be either an existing template or the hiring committee can tailor the posting to reflect specific college needs.
- After the closing date the candidate packets are collected by the committee.
- The interview schedule is agreed on by the committee. Usually one or two consecutive days.
- The packet may have been pre-screened by the Employment Dept. using the minimum qualification as a screening tool, and only forwarding the candidates who have these qualifications. If the packets are not pre-screened, then the committee will be charged with the responsibility to evaluate the qualifications of the applicants.
- The committee convenes with a criteria sheet to evaluate the applicants.
- The committee develops the interview questions based on the job posting.
- The committee members reach a consensus regarding the selected applicants who will be invited for an interview.
- The applicants are called for interview appointments.
- The day of the interviews the committee usually meets prior to the first interview to review the application packets.
- The applicant is called in and introductions are made.
- Questions may be asked by the committee members or by the chair.
- The committee scores the applicants answers to the question on a point system.
- The applicant will be invited to ask questions at the conclusion of the committees query period.
- At the conclusion of the interview, after the applicant has been excused, the committee members will total the points.
- At the end of the interview process the applicants with the highest scores may be invited to return for a second interview with the campus president and/or the hiring manager who will make the final decision.
- References may be checked before or after the second interview.
- The successful applicant will be contacted with a job offer and the other applicants will be notified by mail of the selection.
- The hire date is determined after the MCCCD Governing Board has approved the hiring request.
