Basic Surgical Procedures
Responsibilities of surgical technician in pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative periods. Basic surgical instruments, needles, sutures, stapling devices and syringes. Procedures for instrument count. Application to basic exploratory laparotomy. Prerequisites: Admission to program.

5. Describe parts and types of needles, and demonstrate mounting, threading and passing needles. (IV)

12. Describe the purpose and responsibility for sponge, needle, instrumentcounts and perform a count. (XII)
13. Arrange the sequential procedure required for an incorrect sponge, needle, and instrument count. (XII)
14. Describe guidelines for positioning, prepping and draping and demonstrate the commonly used positions and drapes. (XIII, XIV)
15. Identify electrosurgical accessory equipment and describe safety procedures. (XV)
16. Compare and contrast responsibilities and dual responsibilities of surgical technologist and circulator during pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative periods. (XVI)
17. Pull and set-up basic instruments and demonstrate sequential steps for an exploratory laparotomy during the pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative periods. (I-XVII)
