Provides an overview of normative aspects of human Communication including language, hearing, and speech. Focuses on causes, characteristics and implications of developmental and acquired communication disorders across the lifespan. Prerequisites: SLP104 or ENG213 or permission of instructor. |

Review the normative processes associated with human communication development. (I) |

Present an overview of disordered processes of human communication development. (I) |

Identify and describe the major components of developmental disorders related to language, hearing and speech across the lifespan. (II) |

Identify and describe the characteristics of dysphagia. (I, III) |
5. |
Identify and describe the major components of acquired communication disorders associated with language, hearing, and speech across the lifespan. (III) |
6. |
Identify and describe perceived and real characteristics commonly associated with people with a variety of disabilities and concomitant communication disorders. (IV) |
7. |
Describe the effects of labeling on individuals and their behaviors. (IV) |
8. |
Identify techniques an individual may use to combat labels and their effects. (IV) |
9. |
Describe the social, academic and vocational implications of communication disorders across the life span. (IV) |
10. |
Participate in directed therapy observation and describe observation following designated protocol. (V) |
