Dental Hygiene Theory II
Advanced patient therapeutic techniques. Covers periodontal assessment, oral hygiene instructional methodologies and products, fluorides, advanced instrumentation and sharpening, chairside technologies, and review of the dental specialties. Prerequisites: DHE111.

1. Distinguish a healthy periodontium from a diseased periodontium utilizing clinical findings, histological characteristics and radiographs. (I)
2. Describe the clinical and radiographic parameters of the categories of periodontal case typing as defined by the American Academy of Periodontalogy. (I)
3. Formulate an individualized oral hygiene home care plan for a patient treated in the clinical setting. (I, II)
4. Determine treatment planning and appointment sequencing for each of the periodontal case types. (I, II)
5. Compare and contrast toothbrushes, brushing techniques, dentifices, adjunctive aids and oral chemotherapeutics available for home care use. (II)
6. Explain the systemic and topical effects of fluoride within the human body and on tooth enamel. (II)
7. Assess, recommend and apply fluoride therapy based on patient needs. (II)
8. Explain the significance of root morphology related to advanced instrumentation techniques. (III)
9. Explain and demonstrate safe and effective usage of advanced instrumentation techniques including root planing, sonic/ultrasonic scaling and jet polishing. (III)
10. Describe and employ tooth desensitization medicaments and techniques based on the clinical situation and patient need. (III)
11. Practice effective instrument sharpening. (IV)
12. Describe and demonstrate tooth vitality testing. (V)
13. Explain the basic terminology, types, and components of dental intra-oral video cameras, computers and dental software packages. (VI)
14. Identify and explain the various dental specialties with emphasis on implications for the dental hygienist. (VII)
