Survey of English Literature After 1800

Emphasizes the social and political backgrounds as well as the form and content of English literature in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Prerequisites: (ENG101 or ENG107) or equivalent.

Survey of English Literature After 1800

 

1.

Identify and analyze major social, political, and economic influences contributing to the change and development of English literature. (I-V)

2.

Identify and analyze characteristics of major literacy movements within English literature: Romantic, Victorian, Modern, and Contemporary. (I-VI)

3.

Analyze the works of individual authors (within the backgrounds and movements) and identify characteristics of these works with regard to content and form. (I-VI)

4.

Identify major characteristics of English prosody. (I-IV, VI)

5.

Write essays which draw intelligent generalizations and adequately support them relating specific literature and movements within literature to background influences: economic, political, social. (V)

6.

Write essays which compare and contrast literature of the period with regard to form, content, and efficacy of varying combinations of form and content. (V)
