Dental Anatomy, Embryology and Histology

Includes the histology and embryology of oral tissues; developmental disturbances of the face, oral cavity, and related structures; tooth composition and morphology; eruption patterns and occlusal evaluation. Use of skulls, models and multi-media resources also covered.

Prerequisites: Admission to the Dental Assisting or Dental Hygiene Programs.

Dental Anatomy, Embryology and Histology

Locate and identify the structures and associated landmarks of the head and neck. (I)

Locate and identify the divisions and associated landmarks of the oral cavity and pharynx. (I)

Classify each tooth of the primary and permanent dentition into type and function. (II)

4.

Assign each tooth in the primary and permanent dentition to the Universal Tooth Numbering system, the Palmer system and the International Standards Organization Designation system. (ISOD). (II)

Describe and determine the shedding and eruption patterns of the permanent and primary dentitions. (II)

Describe the normal human prenatal, embryonic and histological development with emphasis on the face, neck, orofacial structures and dentition. (VI, VII, VIII)

9.

Identify and describe the developmental disturbances of the orofacial region and pharynx during embryonic development. (VII)

Describe the development, location, chemical composition, physical structure, and clinical significance of enamel, dentin, pulp and cementum. (VIII)
