Electrical Fundamentals
Fundamentals of electricity including electrical hazards, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, units of measurements and using Ohm's law. Circuit characteristics and the use of Kirchoff's voltage and current laws to calculate voltage drop, current and resistance. Operation and use of specific meters. 1. List and define trade terms associated with the fundamentals of electricity. (I)
2. Identify electrical hazards and describe how to avoid or minimize them in the workplace. (II)
3. Explain OSHA safety issues concerning lockout/tagout procedures, personal protection using assured grounding and isolation programs, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and working on elevated areas. (III)
4. Define voltage, identify the ways in which it can be produced and explain the difference between conductors and insulators. (IV)
5. Define the units of measurement that are used to measure the properties of electricity and perform calculations using Ohm's law. (V)
6. Explain the specific characteristics of series, parallel and series-parallel circuits. (VI)
7. Using Kirchoff's Current Law, calculate the total current in a parallel and series-parallel circuit. (VI)
8. Using Kirchoff's Voltage Law, calculate the voltage drop in a series, parallel and series-parallel circuit. (VI)

10. Describe the operation of specific types of meters used to measure voltage, current and resistance and explain the importance of proper meter polarity. (VII)
