Nursing Process and Critical Thinking IV
Emphasis on nursing care of critically ill and high-risk clients with multi-system health problems. Includes maternal and child health nursing theory in high-risk settings within the framework of growth and development and family dynamics. Emphasis on utilizing critical thinking skills to develop a plan of care to meet complex physical and psychosocial needs including needs specific to the client's cultural heritage and developmental level. Includes the role of the professional nurse in health promotion and maintenance, illness care, and rehabilitation of clients across the life span. Prerequisites: NUR260, NUR262, NUR264, NUR266, and NUR268.

1. Examine critical thinking skills used to make inferences and judgments from client data that describes actual and potential nursing problems to meet the physical, psychosocial, cultural and spiritual needs of clients with high-risk and multi-system problems. (I, IV, V, VI)
2. Integrate critical thinking skills, the holistic approach to care, and the nursing process to meet the needs of the childbearing family, including the normal and high-risk obstetrical and infant and child. (II, III, VI)
3. Use the nursing process to plan care for clients with complex physiological medical/surgical problems that are related to movement and coordination, oxygenation, circulation, and trauma in acute and critical care settings. (I, II, IV, V)
4. Use nursing interventions based on legal and ethical standards of care for selected client problems that are goal related and appropriate to the developmental level of the client. (II, IV, V, VI)
5. Provide culturally sensitive care to promote and maintain the health of clients and families in a variety of clinical settings. (II, III, IV, V )
6. Use therapeutic communication skills and caring behaviors with clients who are with high-risk and have complex physiological problems. (II,V)
7. Use theories of human growth and development to design a holistic nursing care plan across the life span for clients with complex problems. (I, II, III, IV, VI)
8. Apply knowledge of nutrition, fluid and electrolyte balance, oxygenation, and skin integrity to clients with selected complex and multi-system system disorders. (IV, V, VI)
9. Develop specific teaching plans based on identified learning needs of the medical/surgical clients and childbearing family, including the normal and high-risk obstetrical and infant and child clients. (IV, VI)
