Nursing Science I
Provides opportunity for the development of clinical competency in the performance of selected nursing skills and procedures, participation in the care of clients across the life-span experiencing problems affecting clients with selected psychological/mental health disorders, elder clients, and clients with alterations in health, and clinical practice experiences with individuals and families in a variety of acute and community settings. Application of nursing concepts and theories related to the care of the well client and nursing care to meet basic and holistic client needs. Prerequisites: Admission into the nursing program.

1. Demonstrate basic critical thinking skills and simple problem-solving to provide nursing care to clients with psychological/mental health disorders, elder clients, and clients with alterations in health. (I)
2. Select nursing diagnoses that relate to basic and holistic client needs. (II)
3. Choose appropriate interventions according to nursing diagnoses. (II)
4. Document client findings and conditions through recording and reporting. (III)
5. Use therapeutic communication skills with clients with psychological/mental health disorders, elder clients, and clients with alterations in health appropriate to their developmental level. (III)
6. Use verbal and non-verbal communication to demonstrate caring behaviors. (III)
7. Implement interventions that safeguard the client's health and well being. (IV)
8. Demonstrate behaviors that are in accord with accepted standards of practice and ethical guidelines. (V)
9. Perform basic therapeutic, maintenance, and preventative nursing interventions identified in selected client's plan of care. (VI)
10. Prepare and administer oral, topical, intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal medications. (VI)
