Medical/Surgical Nursing
The role of the practical nurse in the care of adults and children. The nursing process specific to the needs of clients with non-critical health care needs. Therapeutic communications, cultural diversity, and special needs of the elderly. Principles of safe nursing practice, interpersonal relationships and written communications in the health care setting. Concepts of venipuncture and basic intravenous therapy. Use of the computer for related course content. Prerequisites: NUR100, or equivalent, or permission of the program director.

1. Utilize critical thinking skills to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate a plan of care to meet the physical, psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual needs of clients from infancy to old age in collaboration with the health care team. (I, II, III, IV, V)
2. Utilize therapeutic communication skills during interactions with clients appropriate to their developmental stage in diverse health care settings and appropriate communication skills during interactions with the health care team. (I, II)
3. Participate in planning and implementing a teaching plan specific to health promotion and health maintenance needs of clients and families in collaboration with members of the health care team and under the direction of an experienced registered nurse. (I, II, III)
4. Implement safe and competent nursing interventions for clients and families in health care settings within the legal scope of practice for the practical nurse and within the ethical framework of nursing. (I)
5. Apply pharmacodynamic and pharmacotherapeutic principles to safely and competently administer medications within the scope of practice of the practical nurse. (I, IV, V)
6. Integrate knowledge of normal physiologic changes of aging into a plan of care specific to the comprehensive needs of the elderly. (I, II, III, V)
7. Utilize principles of life sciences in the safe and competent practice of clinical skills to meet basic needs of clients and in the performance of complex clinical skills. (I,III, IV)
8. Demonstrate the ability to prioritize and manage a group of patients under the direction of a registered nurse, utilizing organizational skills and principles of time management. (I)
9. Demonstrate personal and professional growth through self- evaluation of learning and clinical practice. (I)
10. Demonstrate competency in the utilization of computer skills as an adjunct to classroom instruction and in the clinical agency. (VI)
