Basic Massage Techniques
Basic massage movements and procedures; massage techniques designed to create strength, coordination, stamina, and control; face and scalp massage; hydrotherapy; and massage for nursing and health care. Prerequisites: None.

WED200   19976-19996 Basic Massage Techniques
1. Prepare a client for massage, assist the client on and off the table, and position the client on the table. (I, IV)
2. Use common procedures for draping a client. (I, IV)
3. Explain the importance of maintaining constant contact with a client and demonstrate how that is done. (I, IV)
4. Perform various hand and body exercises that develop strength, coordination, balance, control, and stamina. (II)
5. Use correct standing posture and movements that benefit the massage therapist. (II)
6. Describe the concepts of centering and grounding and how these practices benefit massage therapists. (II)
7. Use a good massage sequence and explain the logic of that sequence. (II)
8. Explain and demonstrate mastery of the six basic massage techniques. (III)
9. Perform a basic body massage and a professional body massage. (IV)
10. Conduct a complete medical history interview and carefully observe and examine a client before giving a massage. (IV)
11. Select and prepare appropriate products to give a face and scalp massage and use the correct procedures. (V)
12. Explain the benefits and contraindications of facial and scalp massage. (V)
13. Explain the use of heat and cold in body treatments and demonstrate how heat and cold can be applied to the body. (VI)
14. Explain the physiology of hydrotherapy and the benefits and contraindications of hydrotherapy. (VI)
15. Explain the benefits of and perform various types of baths including a Swedish shampoo, salt rub, cabinet bath, whirlpool bath, friction bath, Russian bath, and neutral tub bath. (VI)
16. Explain the benefits and contraindications of massage as given by nurses and other health care professionals. (VII)
17. Use the massage procedure generally used by nurses and other health care professionals for healing and convalescence. (VII)
18. Perform an alcohol rubdown. (VII)
