Provides an overview of normative aspects of human communication including language, hearing, and speech. Focuses on developmental and acquired communication disorders. Prerequisites: SLP104 or ENG213 or permission of instructor.

1. Review the normative processes associated with human communication development. (I)
2. Present an overview of disordered processes of human communication development. (I)
3. Outline the Federal definitions and guidelines involved in determining a developmental communication disability. (II)
4. Identify and describe the major components of developmental disorders related to language, hearing and speech. (II)
5. Outline the Federal definitions and guidelines involved in determining an acquired communication disability. (III)
6. Identify and describe the major components of acquired communication disorders associated with language, hearing, and speech. (III)
7. Apply the criteria of Federal definitions and guidelines to determine whether a specific case is a developmental or an acquired communication disorder. (II,III)
8. Identify and describe perceived and real characteristics commonly associated with people with a variety of disabilities and concomitant communication disorders . (IV)
9. Describe the effects of labeling on individuals and their behaviors. (IV)
10. Identify techniques an individual may use to combat labels and their effects. (IV)
