Intermediate Spanish for Law Enforcement
Conversational and written Spanish. Intermediate sentence structure and vocabulary practice that is law enforcement specific. Intermediate level speaking, listening, reading and writing ability in common job-related situations. Course conducted in Spanish.
Prerequisites: A grade of B or better in SPA005AA and SPA109, or permission of Instructor.

1. Use and comprehend in conversation and writing, at an intermediate level of proficiency, the regular verbs in present, preterit, imperfect, future, conditional, present perfect, pluperfect indicative, and imperfect subjunctive tenses. (I,IV)
2. Use and comprehend in conversation and writing, at an intermediate level of proficiency, the irregular verbs in present, preterit, imperfect, future, conditional, present perfect, pluperfect indicative, and imperfect subjunctive tenses. (II, V)

7. Perform, in Spanish, in depth interviews pertaining to assault, robbery, kidnapping, rape, family fight, public disorder and endangerment situations. (XI, XIII)
8. Read and summarize orally, descriptions of crime scenes from Mexican newspapers. (X, XI)
9. Explain how to be aware whether or not a situation is a routine investigation or life threatening by identifying common words and expressions used in threats. (IX, XI)
10. Use regular and irregular informal commands. (VIII)
11. Interpret and translate 30 legal terms from Spanish to English and visa versa. (X)
12. Interpret and translate 10 common terms for weapons from slang and standard Spanish to slang and standard English and visa versa. (XI)
13. Demonstrate ability to do a consecutive interpretation at normal conversational speed with an 85% accuracy. (XII)
14. Create accurate notes of oral statements in Spanish or English and perform sight translations or interpretations of these statements. (XIV)
15. Describe potential cultural problems in law enforcement situations involving Spanish speakers. (XV)
