4. Demonstrate the ability to comprehend natural (that is, continuous, unrepeated) spoken discourse in Russian as well as possible without knowing all the words. (III)
5. Demonstrate the ability to read a Russian text without artificial aids (for example, vocabulary lists, leading questions) and "guess in context." (IV)
6. Write original Russian dialogues and connected narratives. (V)

    I. Speaking skills
        A. Vocabulary
          1. Approximately 200 words (nouns-35%, verbs-15%, adverbs-15%, adjectives/ modifiers-12%, numerals-7%, pronouns-4%, prepositions-2%, other-10%)
          2. Daily drills and oral quizzes on vocabulary learned by associating meaning with pronunciation
        B. Daily drills following examples of a pattern sentence
        C. Daily "talkathons"-speaking as long as possible without stopping or hesitating
      II. Grammar
          A. Nouns and adjectives/modifiers
            1. Gender: three genders in singular
            2. Case: nominative, accusative, and prepositional
          B. Verbs
            1. Present tense: first and third person singular, second and third person plural
            2. Idti vs. exat'
          C. Adjectives: long form vs. short form
          D. Pronouns: nominative and accusative case
          E. Motion vs. location
        III. Listening skills: exercises and activities for developing "skim-listening" skills
          IV. Reading skills: exercises and activities for developing "skim-reading" skills
            V. Writing skills: weekly assignments to write original dialogues and/or connected narratives
