Adult Basic Reading Skills III
A reading skills program for the adult who wants to learn to use the English language in order to function in today's society. Advanced level of reading, speaking, and listening skills.
Prerequisites: A minimum reading level of fourth grade and the ability to communicate well in English. Placement in this class based on faculty interviews and assessment at registration.

1. Identify the sound associated with multiple-sound consonants in the initial, medial, and final position of words. (I)
2. Identify the variant sounds of consonant digraphs. (I)
3. Identify the irregular spelling patterns of vowel sounds. (I)
4. Identify vowels in words that represent the schwa sound. (I)
5. Alphabetize words to the third letter within the word. (II)
6. Use the guide words at the top of a dictionary page to locate a word. (II)
7. Select the appropriate dictionary definition for a word with multiple meanings. (II)
8. Use basic rules of syllabication to divide words into syllables. (II)
9. Define words by using context clues within sentences. (III)
10. Select the homonym appropriate to the context of a sentence. (III)
11. Add the appropriate prefix and suffix to a root word. (III)
12. Identify, pronounce, spell, and use basic sight words. (III)
13. Identify stated and implied main idea of a reading passage. (Fifth-sixth grade reading level). (IV)
