Adult Basic Reading Skills I
Designed to emphasize phonics, structural analysis, elementary vocabulary development, and basic oral and written comprehension for students who already speak and understand English. Prerequisites: Placement in this class based on faculty interviews and assessment at time of registration.

4. Spell complete name and address. (I)
5. Pronounce and write Arabic numerals. (II)
6. Identify the Arabic numeral for its word form. (II)
7. Pronounce and write the letters of the alphabet. (II)
8. Identify consonants in the initial and final position of words. (III)
9. Identify the spelling patterns which represent long and short vowel sounds. (III)
10. Identify consonant blends and digraphs in the initial position of words. (III)
11. Identify r controlled vowels. (III)
12. Identify the number of syllables in words. (III)
13. Add suffixes to known root words. (er, est) (III)
14. Use basic spelling principles to add common suffixes to words. (ed, ing) (III)
15. Form compound words by combining two known words. (III)
16. Use simple rules to form plurals. (III)
17. Add s or 's to words as appropriate to the context of a sentence. (III)
18. Develop a personal sight vocabulary. (IV)
19. Select the word which completes the idea expressed in a sentence. (V)
