Rehabilitation Techniques I
Theory and principles of therapeutic exercise. Includes patient instruction, assessment techniques, manual techniques, assistive devices and equipment used by the physical therapist assistant. Prerequisites: (HLR170, PTA100, and PTA103), or permission of department.

1. Define the "dynamics of motor learning" in relation to physical therapy. (I)
2. List and define "vital signs"' and take and record vital signs for selected patients in physical therapy. (II)
3. Differentiate between normal and abnormal vital signs for specific patients in physical therapy. (II)
4. Define "goniometry" and list the steps involved in goniometric measurement of joint motion. (III)
5. Define "passive", "active", "active-assisted", and "resisted" range of motion as used in relation to physical therapy and differentiate between these categories. (III)
6. Measure the joint motions of the spine and the extremities using goniometric techniques in relation to physical therapy. (III)
7. Describe the method of muscle testing used in physical therapy and explain evaluations according to strength grades. (IV)
8. Test muscles of the trunk and extremities and assign appropriate strength grades for selected patients in the physical therapy practice setting. (IV)
9. Describe the normal postural alignment of the human body. (V)
10. List specific postural deviations in the human body and their causes. (V)
11. Explain the importance of proper patient body mechanics for activities of daily living. (VI)
12. Describe the steps of bed mobility activities. (VII)
13. Instruct and assist patients in bed mobility skills in the physical therapy practice setting using appropriate safety techniques. (VII)
14. Describe proper patient bed positioning for selected patients. (VII)
15. Describe the steps for patients in learning transfer activities in relation to physical therapy. (VIII)
16. Instruct specific patients in transfer activities and complete transfers using safe techniques, with and without equipment, in the physical therapy practice setting. (VIII)
17. List and define "classifications for assistance" and classify the amount of assistance required to complete specific patient transfers according to these classifications. (VIII)
18. Describe the normal human gait cycle and common deviations. (IX)
19. Instruct and assist patients with gait activities in the physical therapy practice setting utilizing appropriate safety techniques, with and without equipment. (IX)
20. Describe wheelchair measurement and operation in the physical therapy practice setting. (X)
21. Instruct selected patients in safe wheelchair management skills in the physical therapy practice setting. (X)
22. Explain the rationale for progressive resistive exercise in relation to physical therapy. (XI)
23. Instruct specific patients in the safe use of exercise equipment in the physical therapy practice setting. (XI)
24. Stretch specific joints and soft tissue structures of selected patients in the physical therapy practice setting using safe, professional procedures. (XII)
25. Describe the application of advanced exercise equipment in the rehabilitation process. (XIII)
26. Define the Subjective/Objective/Assessment/Plan (SOAP) documentation format and document therapeutic exercise, mobility training, and patient's response to treatment in the physical therapy practice setting using the SOAP format. (XIV)
