The Psychology of Developmental Disabilities
The interrelationships among the physical, intellectual, social, and psychological aspects of developmental disabilities (DD). Various service approaches, policies, and programs designed to foster an adequate adjustment for individuals with DD and their families. Values and beliefs relating to persons with developmental disabilities. Prerequisites: PSY101.

1. Identify personal beliefs and attitudes about persons with developmental disabilities and explore the impact these beliefs and attitudes may have on personal interactions with individuals with DD. (I)
2. Describe the nature and causes of various developmental disabilities as well as their diagnoses. (I)
3. Compare psychosocial, psychosexual, and intellectual development processes of persons with and without DD. (I)
4. Identify characteristics of individuals with specific developmental disabilities which may impact their responses to various situations including times of crises (i.e., institutionalization). (II)
5. Explain the process of functional assessment as it relates to persons with DD. (III)
6. Explain the purpose of formulating measurable goals in a variety of areas for persons with DD, including why they are developed, who develops them, and how they are developed. (III)
7. Describe the impact a person with DD may have on other family members and describe techniques which may be used when interacting with non-disabled family members. (III)
8. Identify common issues regarding sexuality among persons with DD. (III)
9. Explain issues specifically relating to the aging process in people with developmental disabilities. (III)
10. Outline specific state regulations related to the protection and rights of persons with DD. (IV)
11. Describe therapeutic systems for persons with DD (i.e., physical and occupational therapy, medical care, medications, education, etc.). (IV)
12. Describe the structure, function, and importance of vocational, educational, and living supports for persons with DD. (IV)
