Child Health Nursing
The role of the Registered Nurse(RN) in the care of infants, children and families. Focus on physical assessment skills and development of critical thinking skills. The nursing process in providing care for infants and children. Emphasis on selection of interventions to meet physical and psychosocial needs including those specific to the child's cultural heritage and developmental level. Use of the computer for related course content. Prerequisites: Acceptance in the Associate of Applied Science Nursing program or permission of the program director.

1. Utilize critical thinking skills in developing a plan to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care to meet the needs of the child and family with emphasis on responses to stressors of hospitalization and illness. (I, II, III)
2. Apply pathophysiology principles to assess and implement the nursing process to achieve outcomes that are family-centered, culturally-sensitive and facilitate growth, development, and coping. (III, V)
3. Apply pharmacotherapeutic principles to safely and competently administer medications to infants and children appropriate to their developmental level and within the scope of nursing practice. (I, II)
4. Utilize communication skills to collaborate with members of the health team to provide instruction and discharge planning to meet the needs of children and families. (I, IV)
