Advanced Medical Surgical Nursing II
Role of the Registered Nurse and professional aspects of practice. Advanced physical assessment skills and utilization of critical thinking skills for clients with multiple acute and chronic health problems. Advanced clinical theory and practice relating to care of clients in the critical care units, including ventilators, chest tubes, hemodynamic monitoring and dysrhythmias. Basic management skills applicable to the role of the registered nurse. Use of the computer for related course content. Preceptor experience in the health care community. Prerequisites: NUR228 and NUR235 or equivalent or permission of program director.

1. Utilize critical thinking to develop a plan of care specific to client needs based on principles of physiology, pathophysiology, and age-related changes. (I, III, IV)
2. Perform safe and competent nursing care of the client by meeting physical, cognitive and psychosocial needs of clients with acute and chronic health problems in an acute care setting. (I, III, IV)
3. Utilize therapeutic communication skills during interactions with clients and families and appropriate communication skills with interactions with members of the health care team including assertiveness, problem-solving, delegation, and conflict resolution. (I, II)
4. Perform safe and competent nursing care for clients within the legal boundaries of the registered nurse scope of practice and within the ethical framework of nursing. (III, VI)
5. Apply pharmacodynamic and pharmacotherapeutic principles to safely and competently administer enteral, parenteral, and percutaneous medications to clients within the scope of nursing practice. (III, V, VI)
6. Apply concepts of critical care nursing for the safe and competent care of patients in the critical care unit with multiple and complex health problems. (III, IV, V)
7. Collaborate with members of the health care team to provide client instruction and discharge planning to meet the client's learning needs addressing the concepts of health promotion and health maintenance emphasizing self-care practices. (I, II, III)
8. Design and write a professional resume for a registered nurse position. (I)
9. Document a preceptor clinical experience in which the student applies nursing theory and clinical experiences to provide holistic, comprehensive nursing care under the guidance of an experienced registered nurse. (VIII)
10. Demonstrate personal and professional growth through documentation of a self-evaluation of learning and clinical practice. (I)
11. Demonstrate competency in the utilization of computer skills as an adjunct to classroom instruction and in the clinical agency. (VII)
