Advanced Medical Surgical Nursing I
Role of the Registered Nurse and professional aspects of practice. Physical assessment skills and development of critical thinking skills to utilize the nursing process for clients with multiple health problems. Emphasis on selecting interventions to meet physical, cultural heritage, developmental and psychosocial needs. Advanced concepts of intravenous therapy and includes parenteral nutrition, blood transfusion therapy and care of central lines. Use of the computer for related course content. Prerequisites: Acceptance in Associate of Applied Science Nursing program or permission of program director.

1. Demonstrate critical thinking skills through the framework of the nursing process to plan and implement nursing care for patients with specific physical, cultural, and teaching needs from admission to discharge. (I, II, III, V)

6. Utilize therapeutic communication skills during interactions with clients appropriate to their developmental stage and appropriate communication skills with interactions with members of the health care team. (I. II, III)
7. Apply pharmacodynamic and pharmacotherapeutic principles to safely and competently administer enteral, parenteral, and percutaneous medications within the scope of nursing practice. (VI, VII)
8. Apply knowledge and skills from the behavioral, physical, and social sciences to assist clients and families to implement a plan of care to achieve an optimum level of wellness. (I, III. IV)
9. Demonstrate personal and professional growth through documentation of a self-evaluation of learning and clinical practice. (I, VIII)
