Obstetrical Nursing II
The role of the Registered Nurse(RN) in the care of the normal and high-risk maternity and infant patient in the acute care setting. Focus on advanced assessments and use of the nursing process to achieve quality care for the childbearing family. Pharmacological aspects emphasized. Cultural influences, learning and psychosocial needs, adolescent pregnancy and single parenting included. Prerequisites: Acceptance in Associate of Applied Science Nursing program or permission of program director.

1. Demonstrate critical thinking skills through the framework of the nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care to meet the physical, psychosocial, cultural, and learning needs of the childbearing family including the normal and high risk obstetrical and infant clients. (I, II, III)
2. Perform safe and competent nursing care by applying principles of normal physiology and pathophysiology for the nursing care of normal and high risk obstetrical and infant clients. (I, II)
3. Provide safe and competent nursing care based on specific needs of the childbearing family relative to ethnic background and cultural heritage, psychosocial status, and developmental level of the family with emphasis on the pregnant adolescent. (I, III)
4. Utilize therapeutic communication skills during interactions with the childbearing family and appropriate communication skills when interacting with members of the health care team. (VI)
5. Utilize scientific principles to safely and competently perform nursing interventions within the legal and ethical boundaries of nursing practice. (I, IV)
6. Apply principles of pharmacology to the safe and competent administration of medications to maternal and infant clients. (III, IV, V)
7. Collaborate with members of the health care team to provide client teaching from admission through discharge to meet the learning needs of the childbearing family, specific to concepts of health promotion, health maintenance, safe maternal and infant care, and infant growth and development. (I, III, IV, VI)
8. Demonstrate personal and professional growth through documented self-evaluation of learning and clinical practice. (VII)
