Psychiatric Nursing
Fundamental theories and concepts of psychiatric nursing including concepts of mental health and mental illness along a continuum. Methods of treatment, planning, and nursing care of clients with specific mental health disorders. Interpersonal relationships and the function of communication in therapeutic interactions. Establishment of a one-to-one nurse/client relationship, formulation of a workable treatment plan, and the utilization of group process skills. Use of the computer for related course content. Prerequisites: Acceptance in associate of applied science nursing degree program or permission of program director.

1. Apply principles of fundamental theories of psychiatric nursing to clients with specific mental health disorders and develop a plan of care to meet their physiological, psychosocial and cultural needs. (I, II, IV)
2. Demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills within the framework of adaptation/ maladaptation to stress to plan and implement nursing interventions for clients with specific mental health disorders . (I, II, IV)
3. Apply the concepts of anxiety and the mental health continuum to the etiology of mental health disorders. (II)
4. Utilize the legal and ethical standards of practice to plan and implement safe and competent nursing care to assist clients in a psychiatric setting to achieve an optimum level of wellness. (III)
5. Utilize therapeutic communication skills during interactions with individual clients and in group settings and apply the fundamental principles involved in developing a therapeutic relationship. (V)
6. Apply pharmacodynamic and pharmacotherapeutic principles to safely and competently administer medications to clients in mental health agencies. (I)
7. Create a collaborative nursing team to include the client and family, resource persons from health care and community agencies in meeting the client's health care needs . (VI)
8. Demonstrate competency in the utilization of computer skills as an adjunct to classroom instruction. (VII)
9. Demonstrate personal and professional growth through documentation of a self-evaluation of learning and clinical practice. (III)
