Obstetrical Nursing I
The role of the Practical Nurse (PN) in the care of the normal maternity and infant patient in the acute care setting. Focuses on assessments and nursing care utilizing the framework of the nursing process. Cultural heritage, learning and psychosocial needs and adolescent pregnancy concepts. An introduction to high risk maternal/infant and congenital conditions. Prerequisites: Acceptance in Practical Nursing program or permission of program director.

1. Utilize critical thinking skills through the framework of the nursing process to develop a plan of care to assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care to meet the physical, psychosocial, learning, and cultural needs of the childbearing family. (I, II, III)
2. Perform safe and competent nursing care of the maternal and newborn clients by applying concepts of the physical and social sciences to meet the needs of the childbearing family. (I, II, IV)
3. Utilize therapeutic communication skills during interactions with the childbearing family and appropriate communication skills when interacting with members of the health care team. (I)
4. Perform safe and competent nursing care to maternal and infant clients within the legal boundaries of the practical nurse scope of practice and within the ethical framework of nursing. (I, IV)
5. Apply principles of pharmacology in the safe administrations of selected medications to maternal and newborn clients. (V)
6. Participate in client instruction to meet the learning needs of the childbearing family specific to the developmental level of the family. (I, VI)
7. Demonstrate personal and professional growth through documented self-evaluation of learning and clinical practice. (VII)
