Nursing Fundamentals
The role of the practical nurse in the care of adults in a variety of health care agencies. Critical thinking skills as part of the nursing process. Nursing care specific to the client's cultural heritage and developmental level. Therapeutic communications, physical assessment and application of pharmacological principles. Clinical nursing skills for the provision of care in a safe, efficient, and caring manner. Use of the computer for related course content. Prerequisites: Acceptance in practical nursing program or permission of program director.

1. Utilize basic medical terminology and therapeutic communication skills during interactions with clients, families and members of the health care team. (I, III)
2. Utilize scientific principles and knowledge of normal physiology to develop a plan of care to meet the physical, psychosocial, cultural, and ethnic needs of clients in the health care agency. (III, IV)
3. Apply pharmacodynamic principles to safely and competently administer medications within the scope of practice of the practical nurse. (I, III, V)

9. Utilize therapeutic communication skills during interactions with clients and families including appropriate interactions with members of the health care team. (I, II, III)
