Designed for students who are learning English as a second language. Includes continued development of vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. Prerequisites: Appropriate ESL placement test score, or grade of "C" or better in RDG009, or permission of instructor.

1. Use previewing skills to predict the main idea of selected passages by using illustrations, titles, and scanning technique. (I)
2. Apply basic word attack skills to unfamiliar words. (II)
3. Predict the meaning of unfamiliar words from the context of the reading passage. (III)
4. Use idiomatic expressions appropriately in everyday communication. (III)
5. Apply vocabulary introduced in reading selections in both speaking and writing. (III)
6. Identify the topic, stated main idea, and supporting details in selected reading passages. (IV)
7. Locate words in a standard English dictionary to determine correct spelling and first definition. (V)
8. Use visual/graphic materials as aids to comprehension. (V)
9. Follow oral and written directions in English. (V)
