Advanced Medical/Surgical Nursing II
Role of the Associate Degree medical-surgical nurse as provider of safe care and as teacher. Emphasis on advanced critical care, pathophysiology and management skills. Advanced use of the nursing process to formulate nursing diagnoses and individualized care plans. Cultural concepts related to pathophysiology and nursing management are included. Utilization of the computer. Also preceptorship in the community. Prerequisites: NUR225, or equivalent, or permission of the Director of Nursing.

1. Integrate medical-surgical nursing concepts derived from pathophysiology to identify specific needs for patients with acute or chronic health disorders. (I)
2. Apply pharmacologic principles for implementation into clinical practice. (II)
3. Utilize the nursing process to develop a plan of nursing care including cultural and legal-ethical considerations for patients with specific acute or chronic health disorders. (III)
4. Apply the beginning principles of management and leadership specific to the nursing role with emphasis on skills of organization, prioritizing, and delegation. (IV)
5. Perform specific critical thinking skills and communication skills related to the role of patient-manager and teacher. (IV, V)
6. State the professional role of the Associate Degree nurse synthesizing professional accountability, quality of nursing care, documentation, and the development of a professional resume. (VI)
7. Demonstrate therapeutic communication skills with patients, families, and health care team. (VII)
8. Utilize the computer to facilitate the role of patient- manager. (VIII)
9. Document a 64-hour preceptorship program including the delivery of safe, cost-effective nursing care to medical- surgical patients. (IX)
