Surgical Technologist First Assistant Preceptorship includes specific numbers of major and minor general surgery cares, major and minor orthopedic surgery and peripheral vascular surgery. Also a variety of endoscopic procedures and cases representing two other specialty areas. Prerequisites: SGT265.

1. Select and demonstrate appropriate surgical techniques related to specific tissue handling. (I)
2. Provide hemostasis through the use of electrosurgery, clamps, pressure/sponging and other specific methods. (II)
3. Demonstrate suturing skills using proper tying techniques and ligation of vessels. (III)
4. Demonstrate wound closure with approximation of wound layers and securing of drains. (IV)
5. Exhibit effective manual dexterity. (V)
6. Select and employ retraction of body tissue consistent with individual anatomy and physiology. (VI)
7. Utilize proper suctioning techniques. (VII)
8. Communicate appropriately with patients, physicians and other members of the health care team. (VIII)
