Child Health Nursing
Introduction to skills and concepts of the registered nurse role in the care of infants, children and families in ambulatory and acute care settings. Focus on physical and developmental assessment of children. Includes implementation of family-centered care plans and effects of illness and treatment upon child and family. Prerequisites: Admission to LPN-AAS Degree Program or permission of the Director of Nursing.

1. Utilizing therapeutic communication skills, assess and document pediatric patients' physical and psychological growth and development level in relation to established normal values. (I)
2. Assess and document child/family response to stressors of hospitalization illness and treatment; list and implement nursing process to establish family-centered, culturally- sensitive interventions which facilitate ongoing growth, development and coping. (II, III)
3. Describe concepts of pathophysiology related to diseases of childhood and apply the related nursing concepts to the delivery of safe, ethical, and scientifically-based nursing care. (IV, V)
4. Report on the relationship between concepts of health promotion and the nursing care of children. (VI)
5. Examine specific factors which place children and families at risk for traumatic injury and describe strategies for intervention regarding these factors. (VII)
