Advanced Medical/Surgical Nursing I
Skills and concepts for the role of the Registered Nurse in care of adults in the acute health care setting. Focus on advanced physical assessment and use of nursing process to develop patient care plans. Implementation of nursing interventions to meet individual needs specific to health problems, learning, and cultural diversity. Emphasis on pathophysiology and pharmacology of selected disease processes. Use of the computer for related course content. Prerequisites: Admission to LPN to ADN program or permission of the Director of Nursing.

1. Describe the skills and knowledge necessary for assuming the role and responsibilities of the registered nurse in patient management. (I)
2. Describe and demonstrate therapeutic communication techniques when conducting the patient interview and implementing nursing interventions. (II)
3. Utilize the nursing process to analyze patient's history and physical assessment to establish nursing diagnoses relating to physical and cultural needs, plan of care, nursing interventions, and evaluation of patients in the acute health care setting. (III)
4. Specify and demonstrate the nursing responsibilities of patient teaching in regard to health promotion and disease prevention. (IV)
5. Report on the relationship between the pathophysiological concepts of selected disease processes to nursing care of patients in the acute care setting. (V)
6. List and explain the effects of selected pharmacologic agents in the management of disease processes. (VI)
7. Utilize legal and ethical concepts to provide safe and effective care of patients in the acute health care setting. (VII)
8. Utilize selected computer simulations and programs as an adjunct to classroom instruction. (VIII)
