Proficient application of theory in tissue exposure, using instruments, suturing and providing homeostasis under the direct supervision of a surgeon. Includes patient assessment and care, professional communication and safety in the surgical setting. Prerequisites: PON286 or permission of instructor.

1. Given physiological alterations, assess and apply appropriate nursing interventions within Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) guidelines. (I)
2. Determine and demonstrate surgical techniques related to tissue handling. (II)
3. Evaluate and provide homeostasis through the use of electrosurgery, clamps, pressure/sponging and other appropriate methods. (III)
4. Demonstrate suturing skills by the use of proper tying techniques and ligation of vessels. (IV)
5. Demonstrate wound closure with approximation of wound layers and securing of drains. (V)
6. Exhibit effective manual dexterity. (VI)
7. Select and employ retraction of body tissue consistent with individual anatomy and physiology. (VII)
8. Utilize proper suctioning techniques. (VIII)
9. Communicate appropriately with patients, physicians and other members of the health care team. (IX)
