Nursing Science III
Emphasis on increasing knowledge base in mental health crisis, maternal-infant high risk situations, and circulatory, mobility, and elimination dysfunctions. Application of nursing process when caring for individual and small groups of patients with chronic/terminal diseases occurring during life cycle. Prioritizing needs and distinguishing between functional and dysfunctional adaptation to multiple stressors affecting body systems. Prerequisites: A grade of "C" or better for the following: BIO201, BIO202, NUR114, NUR120, PSY101, and PSY240.

1. Adapt principles of the nursing process to prioritizing needs of patients with acute mental helath crisis and/or long term, chronic, or terminal illness. (IV)
2. Refine therapeutic communication skills and interpersonal relationships with patients experienceing acute psychiatric, medical/surgical, and obstetric crises and/or long term, chronic, or terminal illness. (II, IV, V)
3. Facilitate a therapeutic environment for patients with mental health, high risk medical/surgical and maternal/infant dysfunction. (II, IV, V)

8. Identify signs and symptoms during the labor, delivery, postpartal, and neonatal periods that indicate emergency or high risk conditions and initiate appropriate nursing action. (II)
9. Recognize health deviations in the mother/fetus and initiate appropriate nursing measures to prevent complications. (II)
10. Describe responses of mothers/infants to problems that represent a high risk helath crisis. (II)
11. Develop self-care and infant teaching plans with normal/high resk mothers. (II)
12. Implement the nursing process when providing care, teaching, and discharge planning for patients of all ages with mobility/skeletal health problems. (V)
13. Identify the physical complications and emotional problems that can result from immobilization and describe the effects of long term or chronic illness. (V)
14. Apply the nursing process to patients with cardiovascular, gynecological, renal, and musculoskeletal health dysfunctions. (III, V)
15. Describe patient responses to sexually transmitted diseases and provide safe nursing care for this patient population. (III)
