Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation II
Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Didactic and psychomotor skill training. Includes endotracheal intubation, defibrillation, synchronized cardioversion, arrhythmia recognition, cardiovascular pharmacology, adult and newborn resuscitation and performance in a code situation. Required for American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support provider skills validation and retraining. Prerequisites: RES109 or current American Heart Association "C" level BCLS.

1. Describe the current emergency cardiac care system and its effectiveness in preventing cardiac death. (I)
2. Describe the risk factors of sudden death. (II)
3. Describe the general management of myocardial infarction. (III)
4. Insert oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airways and provide effective ventillation. (IV)
5. Demonstrate the procedures of adult and infant intubation with endotracheal tube and assess that both lungs are inflated simultaneously. (IV)
6. Apply nasal cannula and simple oxygen and venturi masks. (IV)
7. Ventilate a patients lungs using mouth-to-mask technique and bag-valve devices. (IV)
8. Perform nasal and oropharyngeal suction techniques. (IV)
9. Describe basic electrophysiology of the heart, electrocardiograms (ECG), and monitoring systems. (V)
10. Identify lethal arrhythmias displayed on a static ECG or oscilloscope. (V)
11. Treat a patient with lethal arrhythmias. (V)
12. Demonstrate the procedures of defibrillation and synchronized cardioversion. (VI)
13. Identify the actions, contraindications, side effects, uses and dosages of the following drugs: oxygen, sodium, bicarbonate, epinephrine, atropine, lidocaine, procainamide, bretylium, verapamil, calcium chloride, morphine sulfate, adenosine, IV fluids, cardiovascular adrenergics, and beta blockers. (VII)
14. Identify arterial blood gas findings of acidosis and describe acid base buffer systems of the human body. (VIII)
15. Identify risk factors and prevent catheter and infusion related sepsis. (IX)
16. Describe and apply techniques of peripheral and central intravenous cannulation. (X)
17. Manage a newborn with cardio-respiratory depression. (XI)
18. Explain medico-legal aspects of Advanced Cardiac Life Support. (XII)
19. Perform basic one person and two person cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and manage obstructed airways. (XIII)
