Study of the speech sounds used in English as they are represented by the written symbols of the alphabet. Recognition techniques of spelling patterns and the resulting pronunciation. Syllabication and accent principles which determine pronunciations and definitions of words. Examination of the influences of other languages on current spelling patterns and standard pronunciations. Study of common diacritical markings used to indicate pronunciations as presented in most dictionaries. Prerequisites: Reading placement score (ASSET) or permission of instructor.
