PeriOperative Laboratory

Practical application of perioperative nursing. Aseptic technique. Scrubbing, gowning, gloving, instrumentation, and maintenance of a sterile field. Accountability emphasized.

Prerequisites: PON212 or permission of Department or Division.

PeriOperative Laboratory

 

1.

Demonstrate aseptic technique in scrubbing, gowning, gloving and donning surgical attire. (I)

2.

Demonstrate supine, prone, lateral, lithotomy and sitting positions. (II)

3.

Demonstrate skin preparation and draping for an abdominal procedure. (III)

4.

Demonstrate organizing, wrapping/packaging instruments and supplies for sterilization. (IV)

5.

Differentiate and select appropriate general surgery instruments, supplies, drains and drainbags for basic procedures. (V)

6.

Demonstrate surgical technique by passing instruments in a functional position and preparing/passing sutures and needles. (V)

7.

Demonstrate ability to select and prepare staples and assemble stapling equipment. (V)

8.

Monitor self and others in and out of the sterile field and take appropriate corrective action for break in technique. (V)

9.

Demonstrate handling and labeling specimens when scrubbing and circulating. (V)

10.

Perform sponge, sharp and instrument counts. (VI)

11.

Demonstrate appropriate documentation on perioperative records. (VII)

12.

Participate in a patient/family teaching project utilizing nursing process. (VIII)

13.

Teach coping mechanisms to patients, families and/or the surgical team. (VIII)
