Advanced Surgical Procedures
Major body systems and anatomical structures with corresponding terms and abbreviations related to Surgical Technology. Advanced techniques for pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative periods. Lasers and scopes. Application to surgical and specialized procedures including orthopedic, cardio-vascular, grafting and chest surgery. Prerequisites: HUC170, SGT100, SGT101, SGT102, SGT110, and SGT120.

1. List and describe specific surgeries involving major body systems or areas. (I)
2. Define specific surgical terminology including definitions and abbreviations related to major body systems. (I, II)
3. Identify anatomical structures, incisional approaches and describe function of affected organs. (I, II, III)
4. List indications, diagnostic techniques and specialized procedures forbrain, spine, heart, peripheral vessels, ear and eye. (I, II, III, IV)
5. Describe preparation, care and handling of instruments, supplies and accessory equipment during the pre-operatve, intra-operative and post-operative periods. (V)
6. Describe protection for the anesthetized patient and demonstrate positioning and draping. (VI)
7. Describe step-by-step procedure for opening and closure of specific surgeries. (VII)
8. List type sof anesthesia, safety precautions and describe responsibilities of individual team members regarding anesthetics. (VIII)
9. Describe cardiac/respiratory arrest and demonstrate cardiopulmonary resuscitation. (IX)
10. Describe burn classifications, skin grafts, dermatomes and special graft instuments and supplies. (X)
11. Describe principles of underwater chest drainage and connect systems. (XI)
12. Identify cystoscope, endoscope, laparoscope, ureteroscope and components and describe care, special procedure and safety precautions for each. (XII)
13. Describe joint reconstruction, tendon-ligament repairs, fractures and methods of treatment including casts, materials, applications, and special instruments. (XIII)
14. Describe specific types of lasers, their uses, advantages and safety precautions. (XIV)
