Tile Setting I
Provides orientation to tile setting as a construction trade. Covers basic materials, techniques, and processes used in laying tile as well as safety. Provides experience in operating electrical equipment, grout tile, float wall and deck mud, and practice setting tile in straight lines.
Prerequisites: Apprenticeship status.

1. Describe the history of the tile setting trade, why tilesetting is considered to be a basic trade in the construction industry, and identify the major processes to be learned by the apprentice tilesetter. (I)
2. Explain why specifications are used in tilesetting and identify the five specifications used in the tile industry. (I)
3. Explain why clean work areas are important to workers' safety and identify ways to make such areas safer. (II)
4. Explain why wearing appropriate clothing is important to workers' safety and identify clothing that is safe. (II)
5. Identify the protective equipment which should be used in tilesetting and specific conditions which warrant the use of such equipment. (II)
6. Explain why the incorrect handling, piling, and lifting of materials is potentially dangerous to the worker, and identify ways of doing each safely. (II)
7. Explain why the incorrect use of hand tools is potentially dangerous and identify good work habits related to hand tool use. (II)
8. Explain why working with electrical material is potentially dangerous, and identify safety rules which should be observed when doing so. (II)
9. Identify conditions under which scaffolds must be used, and the general safety requirements of scaffolds, elevators, and hoists. (II)
10. Identify the sfety precautions which must be observed when working with epoxies and mastics. (II)
11. Explain the importance of personal hygiene to workers' safety and identify good hygiene practices. (II)
12. Demonstrate the ability to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and identify specific examples of when CPR should be performed. (II)
13. State the procedure for obtaining medical help and identify specific examples of when such help is required. (II)
14. Describe how tiles are manufactured and how moisture is removed from tile. (III)
15. Identify the four major and five minor types of tile. Describe each and identify at least one use for each. (III)
16. Identify the base materials used intile setting and at least one use for each type of base material and mortar mix. (IV)
17. Describe the base materials used in tile setting and how mortar mixes are prepared. (IV)
18. Identify the types of backings and wire mesh used in tile-setting and describe how metal lath is installed. (IV)
19. Identify the tools used to layout tile work and describe how each is used. (V)
20. Identify the cutting and drilling tools used in tilesetting and describe at least one use of each. (V)
21. Identify the mortar tools used in tilesetting and describe the care required by each. (V)
22. Identify the grouting materials used in tilesetting and where special grouts are needed; and describe how grouts are prepared. (VI)
23. Demonstrate the operation of the proper cement mixers and other power-related equipment in tilesetting. (VII)
24. Demonstrate grouting tile laid on different types of surfaces. (VII)
25. Demonstrate floating wall mud and deck mud. (VII)
26. Demonstrate setting tile strips in a straight line. (VII)
