Law Enforcement Spanish II
Conversational and written Spanish. Intermediate sentence structure, and vocabulary practice that is law enforcement specific; develop intermediate level speaking, listening, reading and writing ability in common job related situations. Course taught in Spanish. Prerequisites: SPA109 and satisfactory score on Pre-Test for Intensive Law Enforcement Spanish.

1. Demonstrate ability to state and understand all numbers. (I)
2. Demonstrate the ability to use and understand in conversational situations the regular verbs in the following tenses: present, preterite, imperfect, pluperfect indicative; the present, imperfect, present perfect, and pluperfect subjunctive. (II)
3. Demonstrate ability to use and understand in conversational situationsthe most common irregular verbs in the following tenses: present, preerite, imperfect, present perfect, and pluperfect indicative; the present, imperfect, present perfect, and pluperfect subjunctive. (III)
4. Formulate detailed questions; and demonstrate ability to comprehend answers in the following areas: (A). General interest, i.e. name, addresses, family, sports, food, work, occupation, special interest, favorite activity, etc. (B). Law enforcement, i.e. legal rights, violation committed, departmental procedures such as sobriety test, etc. C. Health care, ie. types of illnesses, description of symptoms, procedures to follow for the most common medical emergencies. (IV)
5. Demonstrate the ability to understand conversations at a comprehensionrate of 80% from variety of individuals, at normal speed. Video and audio tapes will be used for evaluations. (V)
6. Demonstrate ability to give and understand detailed instructions to any designated area in Mesa. (VI)
7. Give examples of differences between Mexican and U.S. legal procedures. For example, the Napoleonic vs. the English Common Law tradition, rights of suspects, bail, what are considered to be misdemeanors and felonies, traffic regulations, etc. (VII)
8. Demonstrate ability to describe and understand, in detail, the 10 mostcommon physical injuries. (VIII)
9. Demonstrate ability to read and translate statements and confessions in Spanish with a 90% accuracy. (IX)
10. Demonstrate ability to describe and comprehend descriptions of individuals in detail. (X)
11. Conduct hypothetical interviews with classmates for violation of traffic and immigration laws. (XI)
12. Demonstrate ability to fill out all police forms using Spanish as the medium of communication. (XII)
13. Conduct hypothetical interviews with fellow students; take notes of interviews in Spanish, and translate these into English, for the following crimes: a) assaults, simple b) shoplifting c) burglary d) assaults, aggravated e) robbery f) driving under the influence g) disorderly conduct h) homicide i) narcotics j) thefts(auto, etc.) (XIII)
14. Demonstrate ability to carry a telephone conversation at normal speed with emphasis upon law enforcement related vocabulary. (XIV)
15. Demonstrate ability to translate 50 legal terms from English to Spanish and visa versa. (XV)
16. Demonstrate ability to form and use appropriate forms of the "tu" and "Vd." commands with all the regular verbs. Stress will be placed upon those which are law enforcement related. (XVI)
17. Demonstrate ability to form and use the appropriate forms of the "tu" and "Vd." commands of the most common irregular verbs. (XVII)
