Operating Room Orientation

Roles and responsibilities of operating room personnel focusing on the surgical technician. Working conditions, job requirements, limitations, and legal responsibilities. Safety rules, hazards, and safeguards. Orientation to the operating room, instrument processing room, decontamination instrument room, and central supply. Assisting the surgical team in preparation and set up of equipment. Stocking rooms and transporting patients.

Prerequisites: SGT103AA, SGT103AB, and SGT105.

1.

Describe and diagram hospital and operating room department organization. (I)

2.

Describe the roles, responsibilities, and limitations of operating room personnel and members of the hospital directly associated with the operating room. (II)

3.

Describe the physical working environment of the operating room. (III)

4.

Demonstrate the correct attire for the operating room. (IV)

5.

Under supervision, demonstrate correct safety measures when operating flash, high vacuum, and steris autoclaving and sterilization systems. (V)

6.

Under supervision, demonstrate correct operating room asepsis when wrapping and processing instruments, prepping and catheterizing patients. (VI)

7.

Apply standard precautions principles when processing instruments and equipment. (VII)

8.

Under supervision, organize supplies and equipment using the case cart and the surgeon's preference card system for basic procedures. (VIII)

9.

Under supervision, assist the surgical team in pre- operative, intra-operative, and post-operative procedures. (IX)

10.

Demonstrate appropriate, work-related communications with members of the health care team. (X)

11.

Assist with the admission and transportation of the pre- surgical and post-operative patient. (XI)
