Construction Pipe Trades I

Causes, prevention and response for on-the-job accidents. Personnel protection for specific types of work place hazards. Prevention and response for electrical hazards and fire. Rigging equipment inspection and use. Lifting and moving equipment. Types of cranes and crane hand signals. Safety precautions for rigging and moving materials. Blueprint features and care. Safe and proper use of hand and power construction tools. Trade calculations using English and metric units.

Prerequisites: Registered apprentice status or permission of apprenticeship coordinator.

Construction Pipe Trades I

 

1.

Identify causes of, and safety practices to avoid on the job accidents. (I)

Describe equipment and procedures that are designed to protect personnel from general work site hazards including: lifting, confined space, hazardous substances, ladders and scaffolds. (II)

3.

Outline safe practices for working around electrical hazards. (III)

4.

Describe how fires start, prevention of them, and procedures for dealing with them. (III)

5.

Explain inspection procedures for rigging equipment including various types of ropes, chains, end fittings, connectors, and slings. (IV)

6.

List specific types of equipment that are used to lift and move loads. (V)

7.

Demonstrate hand signals that are commonly used for different types of cranes. (V)

8.

Describe the general procedures and safety precautions for rigging and moving materials and equipment. (VI)

9.

Describe specific features of blueprints including types of drawings, lines, symbols, scales, abbreviations and care of blueprints. (VII)

10.

Explain how to properly use and maintain power tools including power drills, power saws, power grinders, jackhammers and hydraulic jacks. (VIII)

11.

Explain how to properly use hand tools including hammers, punches, and prying tools, screwdrivers and wrenches, measuring tools, cutting tools and gripping and holding tools. (IX)

12.

Perform and apply specific trade calculations using English and metric units to the pipe fitting trades. (X)
