Introduction to Yoga Therapy I |

Introduction to the therapeutic use of yoga. Includes basic concepts of yoga therapy, identification of common therapeutic problems and application of yoga asana as a modality of healing. Demonstration and practice of therapeutic techniques and sequences to improve movement and promote health and well-being. Prerequisites: PED270 or permission of Instructor. |

Present an overview of yoga therapy to include its historical roots and its role in the classroom. (I) |

Demonstrate the similarities and differences between therapeutic yoga and other therapeutic systems of healing. (I) |

Describe how yoga asana can be complementary and supportive to other healing modalities. (I) |

Describe and discuss the healing process. (I) |

Identify common therapeutic problems encountered in classroom situations. (II) |

Practice prescribed techniques using yoga asana and modifications of yoga asana to address common therapeutic problems. (II) |

Develop and implement a therapeutic yoga intervention to address a therapeutic problem. (III) |

Identify and demonstrate therapeutic yoga sequences used to address low back problems. (IV) |

Apply the basic elements of therapeutic yoga to develop, implement and evaluate a therapeutic plan to improve movement capabilities that contribute to healing and well-being. (I-IV) |
