1. Create oral discourse in Russian with increasing number of vocabulary items in increasingly complex grammatical structures. (I, II)
2. Engage in spontaneous, unmemorized Russian speech for increasingly longer periods of time. (I, II)
3. Communicate orally in Russian with confidence and ease on expanded subjects. (I, II)
4. Comprehend natural (that is, continuous, unrepeated) spoken Russian on expanded topics without knowing all the words. (III)
5. Derive meaning from context to understand Russian text that is written in the Roman alphabet and that focuses on expanding topics, without using artificial aids such as vocabulary lists. (IV)
6. Write an original, 100-word dialogue or connected narrative in Russian. (II, V)
7. Recognize learned vocabulary written in the Cyrillic alphabet. (VI)

    I. Speaking skills
        A. Vocabulary
          1. Approximately 100 words (45 nouns, 10 verbs, 17 adverbs, 10 adjectives/modifiers, 2 prepositions, 10 numerals, 5 pronouns, 2 other)
          2. Daily drills and oral quizzes on vocabulary learned by associating meaning with pronunciation
        B. Daily drills following examples of pattern sentences
        C. Daily "talkathon"--speaking as long as possible without stopping or hesitating
      II. Grammar
          A. Nouns
            1. Gender: masculine, feminine and neuter
            2. Number: singular and (nominative) plural
            3. Case: nominative, accusative, and prepositional
          B. Verbs
            1. Present tense: singular--first and third person; plural--second and third persons
            2. Infinitive
            3. To go by foot (idti) vs. to go by vehicle (exat')
          C. Adjectives: long form and short form
          D. Pronouns: nominative and accusative cases
        III. Listening skills: exercises and activities for developing "skim-listening" skills
          IV. Reading skills: exercises and activities for developing "skim-reading" skills
            V. Writing skills: assignments to write original dialogues and/or connected narratives
