Speech Disorders and Rehabilitation
Provides an overview of English phonetics. Focuses on speech sound production from a linguistic, physiologic, acoustic and clinical perspective. Transcription of normal and disordered speech at the entry-level using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Reviews characteristics and treatment procedures for a variety of speech disorders.

1. Formulate a comprehensive overview of English phonetics. (I)
2. Identify and describe the acoustic properties of speech sound production. (II)
3. Describe speech sound production from the linguistic, physiologic, and clinical perspectives. (II)
4. Demonstrate broad transcription of normal and disordered speech using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). (III)
5. Identify and describe phonological disorders and explain the causes of each. (IV)
6. Identify and describe phonological delays and explain the causes of each. (IV)
7. Identify and describe screening tests/protocols for articulation disorders including administration and scoring procedures. (V)
8. Identify and describe phonemic contrasts/differences between bilingual speakers and speakers of standard American English. (VI)
9. Identify and describe treatment procedures for articulation and phonological disorders, including procedures specific to bilingual speakers. (VI)
10. Identify and describe treatment procedures for articulation and phonological delays, including procedures specific to bilingual speakers. (VI)
11. Participate in directed therapy observation and describe observation following designated protocol. (VI)
12. Identify symptoms/characteristics of other common speech disorders and describe appropriate treatment procedures for each. (VII)
