Nursing Science I
Development of clinical competency in the performance of selected nursing skills and procedures. Provides for participation in the care of clients experiencing problems of alteration in health and selected mental health disorders. Provides for clinical practice experiences with individuals and families in a variety of acute and community settings. Application of holistic nursing concepts and theories related to health promotion, disease/illness prevention, and health restoration of individuals. Prerequisites: Admission into the nursing program.

1. Demonstrate basic critical thinking skills and basic problem-solving to provide holistic nursing care to clients with alterations in health. (I)
2. Perform appropriate assessment techniques. (II)
3. Select nursing diagnoses that relate to basic and holistic client needs. (II)
4. Choose appropriate interventions according to nursing diagnoses. (II)
5. Evaluate effectiveness of the plan of care. (II)
6. Use verbal and non-verbal communication to demonstrate caring behaviors. (III)
7. Use therapeutic communication skills appropriate to client's developmental level in caring for adults with alterations in health. (III)
8. Document client findings and conditions through recording and reporting. (III)
9. Perform basic health promotion, disease/illness prevention, and health restoration nursing interventions identified in selected client plan of care. (IV, VI)

11. Demonstrate behaviors that are in accord with accepted standards of practice and ethical guidelines. (V)
12. Prepare and administer oral, topical, intramuscular, subcutaneous and intradermal medications. (VI)
