Applied EKG
Entry-level training to professionally perform, process, and explain the electrocardiogram. Overview of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and conduction systems. Overview of commonly encountered drugs in cardiac medicine. Data collection, selection, processing, and presentation for the appropriate medical/clinical professional to review. Selected specific non-invasive cardiac testing procedures. Prerequisites: (HCC101, HCC103, HCC105, HCC107, and HCC109), or permission of program coordinator. Corequisites: HCC140.

2. Describe the major cardiac veins and arteries, heart chambers, valves, cardiac muscle, and coronary blood supply. (II)
3. Locate and determine heart position to accurately place electrodes. (II)
4. Describe the physiological processes governing the cardiovascular system. (III)
5. Determine the origin and measurement of common EKG intervals, segments, heart rate, and normal sinus rhythm. (III)
6. Identify commonly used cardiac drugs. (IV)
7. Use common EKG principles, techniques, potentials, and limitations in testing. (V)
8. Explain why different leads are included in the standard twelve-lead electrocardiogram. (V, VI)
9. Describe the electronic concept of twelve-lead, three- channel, and single-channel EKG machines, patient and equipment grounding, maintenance, and repair. (VI)
10. Demonstrate safe and effective EKG testing procedures, patient preparation, and explanation of test to patient. (VII)
11. Identify patient data during procedure, normal vs. abnormal rhythm, and patient and electrical artifacts. (VII)
12. Perform selected methods of data presentation, selection, labeling, and preparation for review. (VII)
13. Identify selected additional non-invasive and invasive tests. (VIII)
