Dental Hygiene Theory III
Advanced periodontal therapy. Covers slim-line root planing, soft tissue curettage, suture placement, alternate fulcruming techniques and the preparation of a periodontal case documentation. Prepares students to administer and monitor local anesthetic agents and nitrous-oxide-oxygen analgesia. Prerequisites: DHE104, DHE109, DHE111, DHE113 and DHE121.

1. Prepare and present a case documentation on a patient classified as periodontal case type II, III or IV to include a complete perioassessment, radiographs, intra/extra-oral photos, study models, dietary analysis, occlusal analysis, oral hygiene instructional plan and proposed case prognosis. (I)
2. Demonstrate advanced root planing techniques by utilizing slim-line ultrasonic scaling inserts and alternative fulcruming techniques. (II)
3. Describe the process for the safe application of and final prognosis of soft tissue curettage. (II)
4. Describe and employ interrupted suture techniques based on patient needs. (II)
5. Explain pain/impulse conduction related to nerve anatomy and physiology. (III)
6. Trace and describe the anatomical considerations of the Trigeminal nerve. (III)
7. Prepare and administer safe and effective regional anesthesia. (III, IV, V, VI, VII)
8. State the pharmacology properties, actions, considerations and contraindications to local anesthetic agents and vasoconstrictors. (IV, V)
9. Perform and explain considerations of pre-anesthetic physical and psychological assessments related to the administration of a local anesthetic agent/vasoconstrictor. (IV, V, VI)
10. Differentiate between the depths of anesthesia. (VII)
11. Explain possible local and systemic complications, their management and prevention related to the administration of a local anesthetic agent. (VIII)
12. Indicate the properties, considerations and contraindications to, and the safe administration and monitoring of nitrous- oxide-oxygen analgesia. (IX)
13. Demonstrate familiarity and maintenance of nitrous-oxide- oxygen analgesia equipment. (X)
