Dental Morphology, Embryology and Histology
Covers embryology; histology of oral hard and soft tissues; developmental disturbances of the face, oral cavity and related structures; tooth composition and morphology; eruption patterns and functional assessment of oral structures. Prerequisites: Admission to the Dental Hygiene Program or permission of the instructor.

1. Locate and identify the regions and associated surface landmarks of the face and neck. (I)
2. Locate and identify the divisions and associated landmark of the oral cavity and pharynx. (I)
3. Classify each tooth of the primary and permanent dentition into type and function. (II)
4. Assign each tooth in the primary and permanent dentition to the Universal Tooth Numbering system, the Palmer system and the International Standards Organization Designation system. (II)
5. Identify the structures and surfaces of the teeth. (II)
6. Describe and determine the shedding and eruption patterns of the permanent and primary dentitions. (II, III, IV, VIII)
7. Describe the morphologic characteristics and developmental disturbances of each tooth in the primary and permanent dentitions. (III, IV)
8. Explain the functional assessment by recognizing characteristics and components of normal and malocclusion. (V, VI)
9. Describe the normal human prenatal and embryonic development, with emphasis on embryonic development of the face, neck orofacial structures, tooth and root. (VII, VIII)
10. List, classify and describe each of the basic histological types of tissues, to include bone, epithelial, connective, muscle and nerve tissues. (IX)
11. Describe the histological development, types, location, cellular and clinical significance of the oral mucosal, gingival, dentogingival, glandular, lymphatic, nasal and paranasal tissues. (X)
12. Describe and discuss the properties, the apposition, and the maturation of the enamel matrix. (XI)
13. List the components of mature enamel. (XI)
14. Describe the development, location, chemical composition, physical structure, and clinical significance of dentin and cementum. (XI)
15. Explain the development, location, structural elements, regressive changes, and clinical significance of the pulp. (XI)
16. Describe the cellular composition, structure, and clinical significance of the periodontal ligament and surrounding tissues. (XI)
17. Explain the development, location, structure, function, physiological changes, and clinical significance of the alveolar bone. (XI)
18. List and define the importance of periodontal and gingival fibers and explain the function of these fibers and as related to dental hygiene therapy. (IX, X, XI)
