Electronics for Air Conditioning (HVAC&R)

Construction and operation of the positive/negative (P/N) junction. Function of rectifiers, transistors, diacs, triacs and operational amplifiers. Testing of contact current generator circuits and set level detector circuits. Prerequisites: HVA115 or permission of department. Corequisites: HVA201LL or permission of department.

Review the theory of electricity and atom parts, draw electrical circuits, identify electrical-electronic symbols and calculate electrical quantities such as resistance, voltage, power, inductance, capacitance and impedance. (I)

2.

Explain the safe use and operation of electrical meters. (I)

3.

Describe basic P/N junction construction and explain the operation of and test the P/N junction of diodes to identify the anode and cathode. (II)

4.

Identify and explain the operation of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) and photo diodes. (III)

5.

Explain operation of and identify specific types of rectifiers. (IV)

6.

Explain the function of specific transistors, the differences between negative-positive-negative (NPN) and positive-negative-positive (PNP)transistors and describe testing of transistors. (V)

7.

Explain the function and operation of unijunction transistors (UJT),identify the symbol and test for base1, base2 and emitter. (VI)

8.

Explain the function and operation of silicon-controlled rectifiers(SCR), identify the symbol(s) and test for anode, cathode and gate.(VII)

9.

Explain the function and operation of diacs and triacs, identify the symbols and test triacs for MT1, MT2, and gate. (VIII)

10.

Explain the function and operation of operational amplifiers (OP-AMP)and identify the terminals. (IX)

11.

Explain the operation of temperature sensitive materials including thermistors and thermocouples. (X)

12.

Describe the designing, building and testing of circuits as constant current generators and set level detectors for temperature. (XI)
