Advanced Life Support Refresher Course: Lab
|

Clinical experience designed to meet requirements for EMT- Intermediate and
EMT-Paramedic under guidelines of the U.S. Department of Transportation
(U.S. DOT), National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) as recognized by the Arizona
Department of Health Services (A-DHS) Bureau of Emergency Services (B-EMS).
Provides updated knowledge and skills related to hypoperfusion states,
respiratory arrest or insufficiency, seizure states, cardiovascular
emergencies, unconscious of undetermined etiology, head injury with altered
levels of consciousness, and chest trauma. Validates requisite knowledge,
validates skills, reviews and informs students of new standards and
technologies. Trains and educates out of state applicants in knowledge,
procedures, medications, and skills specific to Arizona's system.
Remediates students who have been unsuccessful three times on the
certification examinations, and refreshes information for those who have
expired certifications and desire re-entry into the EMS system.
Prerequisites: EMT272, or EMT208, and EMT273, and (current EMT-Advanced
Paramedic or Intermediate certification). Prerequisites or Corequisites:
Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support Health Care Provider
validation, or Advanced Cardiac Life Support validation, or Pediatric Life
Support validation.

Perform and document on a training program skills sheet an adequate
physical examination and assessment of patient's condition, obtain an
accurate medical history, and perform auscultation of heart and lung
sounds on at least ten (10) patients. (I, II)

Obtain and record on a training program skills sheet a complete set of
vital signs on at least twenty-five (25) patients. (II)
|
3.
|
Describe signs and symptoms of the presenting problem to the preceptor
in a comprehensive and orderly fashion on at least ten (10) patients.

4.
|
Prepare and administer any of the drugs carried in the Paramedic or
Intermediate (I-EMT) drug box via intr osseous (IO), intravenous (IV),
intramuscular (IM), subcutaneous (Sub Q), and oral routes. (IV, V)
|
5.
|
Review medications being administered to at least two (2) patients and
correctly identify to the preceptor the indications,
contraindications, side effects, and dosages. (IV, XII)
|
6.
|
Identify and describe to the preceptor one's knowledge of emergency
drugs including pharmacological properties, dosage, clinical
indications, contra-indications, and possible side effects. (IV, XII)
|
7.
|
Establish and record on a training program skill sheet an intravenous
(IV) line on at least fifteen (15) patients. (V)
|
8.
|
Develop skills in the recognition of infiltration and discontinuing IV
lines. (V)
|
9.
|
Observe the emergency department physician interview and assess at
least ten (10) patients; analyze the systematic approach the physician
uses and determine if there are any variations from the approach
taught in the training program; and discuss with the physician the
rationale for any variations. (VI)

Observe each use of the telemetry unit between Paramedic or I- EMT
unit in the field and Emergency Department personnel, and assess the
quality and quantity of information given by personnel in the field
and response of emergency room personnel on information given. (VI)

|
Assist in the triage of at least ten (10) patients. (VII)
|
12.
|
Place and change monitor leads on at least ten (10) patients. (VIII)
|
13.
|
Develop skills in the recognition of cardiac arrhythmias with emphasis
on knowledge of standard emergency care and treatment. (Paramedic
only) (VIII)
|
14.
|
Assess and document three (3) different EKGs using three (3) different
calculating methods (Paramedic only). (VIII)
|
15.
|
Report any observed changes in an EKG rhythm appropriately (Paramedic
only). (VIII)
|
16.
|
Assist with defibrillation and/or cardioversion of any patient
requiring the treatment in the Emergency Department (Paramedic only).

17.
|
Assist in application of casts and splints on any patient requiring
the treatment in the Emergency Department. (IX)
|
18.
|
Assist in the care of lacerations, suturing, control of bleeding, and
application of dressings of any patient requiring the treatment in the
Emergency Department. (X)

19.
|
Perform insertion and maintenance of nasogastric tubes and catheters
and identify complications in their use. (XI)
|
20.
|
Obtain blood samples on any patient requiring the procedure in the
Emergency Department. (XI)
|
21.
|
Perform all airway skills including endotracheal, nasostracheal
intubation, and surgical crichothyrotomy. (XI)
|
22.
|
Accurately and comprehensively report treatment and response to
treatment of Emergency Department patients to the preceptor. (XII)
